My first Mask & Wig show is in less than three hours time!
Mine. I'm in it. I'm acting. Two months ago I totally didn't realise what a total shit it is!
Mask & Wig is the most prestigious comedy theatre club in U Penn, could well be in US. Its history dated back to 1888. We used to be so big in early 20's century we have our own train!! Everywhere we go the local people will organize a marshal for us, or stuff like that. Our icon performance is 'burlesque', I figure it means something funny, or you know, something very, uh, very funny. But one thing I could be sure: it involves music, too. We used to be so good at music our songs were the rage of the big band orchestra, radio shows, and solo acts of the day. The likes of Frank Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Les Brown all covered Mask and Wig tunes. You'll know I'm not talking cock by looking at the spectacular English.
Yeah, it is god-damned prestigious. We even have our own club house in downtown. Converted from a church by Wilson Eyre and decorated by Maxfield Parrish, not that I know who they are, supposed to be really really big names. And I swear to God and Osama Bin Laden, it is so fucking awesome!!! Man you gotta be in there.
So the point is. I'm in a really really great club. And the best lesson I've learned is that comedy is drama, drama is very serious, thus comedy is a very very serious business.
In my life I've been a joker, doing clowning acts to amuse girls and non-girls. Sometimes I do crosstalk and write sketch comedy, even a musical one when I feel like it. But I feel I'm merely abusing my talent. It's like I always flaunt it but I never take pride from it. I was always like: anyhow lah! as long as funny can liao lah!! (apology to non-singlish-speaking ppl)I used my humour to garner attention instead of treating it like an art.
Well, my seniors at Mask&Wig taught me that it is an art. They taught me how to deal with comedy seriously while being funny. Now I'm feeling so honored to be staging our kick-ass show tonight with all those genius actors, including Gary Lundy, who was in the movie "Dornie Darko", #91 in IMDB top #250, as well as leading in "Burning Annie", an independent production which has won very high ratings among critics.
WOW.
I'm so excited!!
